Locks of love: the Isola Tiberina reappear

March 3, 2007 at 13:09 - Source: repubblica.it
Pushed by an act of vandalism from their natural home, Ponte Milvio the "locks of love" have reappeared this morning on Tiber Island, bound and chained to one of the oldest bridges of Rome, the Ponte Cestius. Sixty
padlocks, complete with dedication in red ink or black treacle oozing, are visible on one of seven balusters Liberty Guiding lights on the railing of the right. Whether it's a "hic manebimus optime" you can tell by the fact that the other three columns, two on the opposite side and a parapet, are already in place to accommodate all its share of promises of eternal love. On each was mounted on a chain, strictly closed, ready to offer a dozen pairs of entwined, and convinced that there was nothing to destroy.
